Mythical women in contemporary fiction (LIT 23)

  • Day and time: See dates below 14:15 - 15:45
  • Length of course: 2 terms. Autumn (3 Weeks), Spring (2 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 8
  • Start date: 09 October 2023
  • Description:

Myths stem from cultures of oral storytelling where stories are told over and over again with each retelling bringing something new. Now these stories are being retold by contemporary authors from the perspective of female characters, such as Medusa, Penelope, Jocasta and Clytemnestra, changing our understanding of the stories and giving some insight into the motivations and emotions of these mythical women. Each month we will read and discuss one novel, sharing thoughts and ideas with the group. We will provide some background on the original myth for each session, so there is no requirement for you to be familiar with Greek myth before the class. The book we will read for the first class in October is Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes ISBN: 9781529061512. Course dates - 9 October, 6 November, 4 December, 8 January, 12 February, 11 March.
