Last year we tracked the history for Rome and its buildings from its supposed foundation in 753 BC down to the fall of the Empire. This year we take the story forward, looking at the transition from pagan to Christian traditions and continuing through the Dark and Middle Ages to the Renaissance, Counter Reformation and Baroque before considering the changes made post 1870 and during the fascist era. The main themes will be enlivened by contemporary accounts of life in the city to put the buildings and street plan into their social, political and economic contexts. There will be no class one week (tbc) in the Summer Term.
