  • Description:

    An introduction to Western European art, from the religious and civic art of late mediaeval and Renaissance Italy via the formation, in the 17th and 18th Centuries, of the French and British Royal Academies, to 19th Century movements such as Pre-Raphaelite art and Impressionism. No previous knowledge required - just enthusiasm to learn something new and willingness to take part in class discussions. The class seeks to: build practical skills in looking at painting and sculpture. introduce formal terms such as composition, perspective, genre and meaning. and consider how writers, institutions and artists themselves have shaped ideas about what we think is 'beautiful' or 'great art'. Participation is an important part of the course and everyone is encouraged to make an end-of-term presentation. Occasional Wednesday afternoon visits will also be offered, to the Fitzwilliam Museum and/or other local sites.
