Titian (spring term) (ARTA 08)

  • Day and time: Friday 14:50 - 15:45
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Spring (10 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 16
  • Start date: 13 January 2017
  • Description:

Titian was one of the most revolutionary artists in the history of European art and perhaps the most influential. He excelled at portraiture, public and private devotional images, mythological scenes and allegories. We will examine how his art grew out of that of his Venetian predecessors and in response to Michelangelo, the classical sculptures being unearthed and to Dürer’s extraordinary prints. We will debate vexed questions of meaning and ask how Titian negotiated the cultural and political milieu of his time, how he stage-managed his career and what we can infer about the way in which he ran his workshop. I would hope to include visits to the Fitzwilliam Museum and National Gallery.
