Statistics and the Media (MTH 04)

  • Day and time: Thursday 15:30 - 16:45
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 3 terms. Autumn (10 Weeks), Spring (10 Weeks), Summer (9 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 10
  • Start date: 13 October 2016
  • Description:

This discussion group covers the use (and mis-use) of data and statistics in the media. We combine introductions to basic statistical methods with the examination of news articles which feature statistics and try to analyse how the base data have been interpreted and presented. Members are encouraged to contribute or present news items and statistical ideas for discussion. Expertise in statistics is not required but members will find it useful if they have studied maths to ‘A’ level standard (even if it was 50 years ago!).

  • Format: Discussion

  • Co-ordinator: Mr Jim Rickard
