The Story of Gravity (MTH 06)

  • Day and time: Wednesday 14:25 - 15:50
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 2 terms. Autumn (8 Weeks), Spring (8 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 10
  • Start date: 12 October 2016
  • Description:

Gravity is a phenomenon that we all experience but cannot explain. Isaac Newton once said that gravity was “so great an absurdity that I believe no man who has in philosophical matters any competent faculty of thinking can ever fall into it.” This course is a journey from gravitas to gravity waves, from real force to pseudo-force, from the Big Bang to the black hole to the Higgs boson and the graviton. This new course is based on ongoing research and considers the people, the science, the maths and, of course, the gossip of the life of this dynamically changing, spacetime bending concept. Mathematics is not a requirement, as all concepts will be explained, though mathematicians are warmly welcome.
