A Free Country? (CUR 01)

  • Day and time: Wednesday 13:15 - 14:15
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Autumn (10 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 12
  • Start date: 12 October 2016
  • Description:

This will be a discussion group led by John Tanburn based on his book A Free Country? Topics addressed will include the difference between Freedom and Anarchy (which is the web?), Freedom and Human Rights (are they the same or different?), Freedom and Privacy (is there a connection? The requirements of security and freedom of speech), and the constitutional structures necessary for the protection of freedom (are they robust, decaying or under attack?). The course will act as a laboratory in which we work out what free speech actually entails, in practice as well as in theory. Information about the author and the book can be found on Amazon, with endorsements by three Cambridge professors and reviews.
