It is surprising how often scientific discoveries are made by chance. Sometimes an attempt to make one substance has resulted in something completely different. Apparently trivial observations have turned out to be of huge significance. There are instances where poor experimental technique and even poor hygiene have led to very useful findings. We will explore a range of examples of chance discoveries in Chemistry including artificial sweeteners, medicines, explosives, polymers and dyes. Prior knowledge of chemistry will not be assumed. It is hoped that a set of course notes will be available. A contribution of £2 to £3 will be requested to cover production costs.
