Astronomy is more than a spectator sport (summer term) - NB term changed (SCE 03)

  • Day and time: Tuesday 10:00 - 11:20
    Weekly
  • Length of course: 1 term. Summer (5 Weeks)
  • Number of places: 39
  • Start date: 18 April 2017
  • Description:

This short course is for people who think astronomy may be interesting, but have never had the time to find out. The scope includes a ‘wide angle” view of the subject, in which there is more emphasis on width than depth. The best analogy is an astronomical safari, pointing out topics and features of interest, in the hope that some will whet your interest, such that you will want to pursue them further. The topics covered will include – the structure of the universe, our current state of knowledge, how that understanding has been achieved, an introduction to stargazing and current “hot topics” in astronomy. I will also provide a guide to the enormous range of astronomy related activities available for all ages, from lectures to astro tourism! (eg. Academic, space agencies & tablet apps.) No prior knowledge will be assumed (there will only be one equation!)
