Would you like to enjoy walking more safely in the open countryside? What would you do in the hills if the mist came down, the weather changed for the worse and it got dark? The course consists of three practical classroom sessions at St Columba's Church followed by practice outside in the evening which will finish in the dark. For all of these you will need a compass. We will cover basic map reading, visualising the shape of the ground from contours, estimating distance and timing, and using the compass to find the direction of travel. We will look at and practice a variety of navigation techniques – all with the objective of making mountain travel more enjoyable and hopefully safer. For the evening outdoor session, when we will work in groups of a maximum of 6 people, you will need in addition a head torch, boots and clothing for all weathers. We will walk for 2-3 hours and a basic level of walking fitness is required. Surprisingly, it is possible to do much of what it possible in the mountains – in Cambridgeshire!
