The course will cover Islamic buildings from the earliest years and grouped by countries and dynasties in the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. It will be illustrated with slides of mosques, tombs, palaces and fortifications to show the development of different styles. * Earliest buildings and their characteristics * Middle East - Umayyads and Abbasids * Turkey - Seljuks and Ottomans * Egypt - Fatimids and Mamelukes * North Africa & Spain - Almoravids and Almohads * Central Asia - Ilkhanids and Timurids * Iran - Safavids * India - Sultanates and Mughals. It will be based on Islamic Art & Architecture , Robert Hillenbrand, Thames & Hudson 1999.
