The course will tell the story of the Anglo-Saxons from their arrival as Angles, Jutes and Saxons and the development of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms until the beginning of the nation state under Alfred. We will use sources such as archaeology, Bede’s Ecclesiastical History and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. We will look at Anglo-Saxon art from the early days with its Germanic influences as seen with jewellery and carved crosses, to the development of an Anglo-Saxon aesthetic in illuminated manuscripts. We will also look at Anglo-Saxon poetry and literature such as The Seafarer and the Dream of the Rood , which will help us to see into the mind of an Anglo-Saxon.
