High Treason and a Medieval Royal insult in a Cambridgeshire Village Church – David Oates

Speaker: David Oates, U3AC Member interested in heraldry since his schooldays

Synopsis: The 39 coats of arms on the Orwell chancel ceiling are a remarkable and unique survival from the fourteenth century, commemorating the rise, fall and restoration of Sir Simon Burley, an important figure during the troubled reign of the young King Richard II, executed for High Treason. The arms include not only many of the local gentry but national figures of the nobility – some appearing in Shakespeare’s Richard II.
