Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has since been the home of 40 monarchs. Soon after arriving, we will hopefully view the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside. The medieval Undercroft Cafe provides an atmospheric setting if you wish to have a tea / coffee break when we first go into the Castle. Then with your own included audio guide you can enjoy key highlights such as the glittering Grand State Room, colossal Waterloo Chamber and Grand Staircase. The Lantern Lobby houses the impressive suit of armour worn by Henry VIII, capable of being regularly adjusted to fit the King’s ever-expanding figure! There is a vast collection of rare and beautiful paintings, porcelain and furniture. Queen Mary’s Dolls House is a stunning treasure, containing exquisitely detailed miniature furniture, lighting, books and which even has its own electricity and running water. In the grounds you can also visit St George’s Chapel; famous worldwide as the scene of many royal weddings. Leaving at 1.15pm we drive to The Savill Garden. Set in 35 acres of Windsor Great Park, the gardens were commissioned by King George V. You can explore at leisure the beautiful woodland of twisting trails and enjoy a huge variety of plants and trees. Highlights include the National Collection of Rhododendrons, Punchbowl of Azaleas and the Heather Garden, as well as a host of colourful seasonal planting. The magnificent Rose Garden was opened by Queen Elizabeth II. At the entrance, the lovely Visitor Centre, built entirely from estate oak, serves delicious lunches, afternoon teas and snacks, for you to enjoy as you choose.
